When attending a networking event Begin with an end in mind. This might include how many connections/ business cards you want to have at the end of the event. If you are uncomfortable, consider attending with a friend.
Learn to ask great questions. Make a list and memorize 3 to 5 questions that you can ask. Try to ask questions that are out of the norm. Be interested in the people. “People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.” Some Key Questions: What brings you here today? What would be a good referral for you? How did you get into the business you are in? What do you need more of in your business right now?
Learn to be someone who can add value to your network? Build your network wide and deep. Give referrals and always ask how can I be of help or who do you need to meet.
Keep in touch regularly with your contacts and do things differently. Consider sending a news article or a podcast, blog post that one may find interesting. Send a Thanksgiving Card or a thank you note in the mail.
Make yourself invaluable to your network. Grow and invest in yourself by attending conferences, workshops, read. Be the person who isn’t too busy to brainstorm. Have fun, motivate yourself by inspiring others.
